Celebrating National Public Gardens Week: Why Green Spaces Matter More Than Ever
Each year, on the Friday before Mother’s Day, we take a moment to celebrate National Public Gardens Day — a tribute to the incredible gardens and green spaces that enrich our communities, our environment, and our lives. These living landscapes are far more than places of beauty. They’re places of connection, education, healing, and ecological importance.

At RCI, we are proud to support the vision behind public green spaces through thoughtful landscaping and horticultural care. While the scope of our work varies across different projects and locations, our team shares a deep appreciation for what public gardens represent — and why they matter so much in the world we’re shaping.
A Vital Part of Our Communities
Public gardens serve a purpose that extends far beyond seasonal blooms. In a world where time outdoors is often replaced by screens and schedules, these spaces offer something essential: access to nature.
They invite us to pause, to reflect, and to breathe. They offer a chance for families to walk hand-in-hand under shaded canopies, for children to learn about pollinators and native plants, and for individuals to find peace in the midst of city life. Whether you’re admiring a curated garden bed or simply strolling along a winding path, the benefits of being in a green space are clear — reduced stress, improved mental health, and a greater sense of community.
Local Treasures Worth Celebrating
Across our region, public gardens serve as keystones of urban and suburban life. We’re fortunate to have access to several standout spaces, including:
The New Orleans Botanical Garden at City Park – A stunning 10-acre garden showcasing thousands of plant species from around the world, historic WPA-era architecture, and artistic sculptures woven into the landscape. It’s a gem of the city and a destination for education, recreation, and horticultural appreciation.
City Park in Gretna – A community-centered green space that provides families a peaceful place to enjoy native plantings, walking trails, and recreational features in the heart of Gretna.
Other community gardens and parks throughout the region that offer similar experiences — whether it's a native pollinator garden, a serene lakefront trail, or a shaded urban park designed to welcome everyone.
While RCI’s contributions to these spaces vary, we are always proud to play a role in supporting environments that reflect the best of landscape design and ecological stewardship.
Why Public Gardens Deserve Our Support
Public gardens are a public good. They:
- Connect kids with nature, helping the next generation learn to value the environment and appreciate where their food, air, and water come from.
- Provide educational programming that fosters lifelong learning, from school field trips to master gardener workshops.
- Preserve plant biodiversity and showcase native and adapted species that support local ecosystems.
- Offer inclusive, welcoming spaces that bring people together across backgrounds, generations, and interests.
And importantly, they inspire. Whether through a carefully maintained rose garden, a native wildflower meadow, or a thoughtfully designed community green space, public gardens remind us of what’s possible when nature and people grow together.

A Greener Future
At RCI, we believe that sustainable, thoughtfully designed landscapes have the power to transform communities — and public gardens exemplify that vision. As we recognize National Public Gardens Week, we honor not just the gardens themselves, but the people and organizations behind them: the horticulturists, designers, volunteers, and caretakers who bring these spaces to life.
We encourage everyone to visit a local public garden this week — to walk the paths, breathe in the scent of spring, and reflect on the green spaces that have shaped your own story.
Let’s continue to invest in places that help us grow together. Looking to bring new life to your public or private landscape? RCI’s team of professionals is here to help craft outdoor spaces with purpose and beauty.
